With most remaining tariffs on U.S.-Mexican farm trade set to expire on Jan. 1, experts are warning of fallout here ranging from a loss of genetic diversity in agriculture to an environmentally destructive surge in illegal settlements. The expiration, required under the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta), affects tariffs on 80 types of U.S. farm imports to Mexico. Most of the tariffs were already negligible, having been scaled back since Nafta took effect in 1994; but some, including those for pork, live pigs, eggs, chickens, apples and powdered milk, will fall to zero from as high as 50%.
