Gold-mining project roils tourist community

Coverage of Esquel, a picturesque corner of Argentine Patagonia, usually is confined to the tourism pages. But these days, the Andean vacation community finds itself the subject of a front-page national debate about a proposal for open-pit gold mining just 4.3 miles (7 kms) from the city center. The project is backed by the Canadian company Meridian Gold, which recently merged with Brancote Holdings of the United Kingdom. Key authorities in Esquel and Chubut province, where Esquel is located, support the mining effort on grounds it promises an infusion of new investment and jobs amid Argentina’s punishing economic crisis.
