Nicaragua’s top environmental watchdog has declared war on what he calls the “timber mafia,” and he wants the military stationed in three key reserves. Meanwhile, President Enrique Bolaños has announced he will declare a moratorium on all timber operations here, and Nicaragua’s Congress is now considering the imposition of a three-year logging ban. “We are going to leave our children and grandchildren without the richness of our forests,” Bolaños told reporters while visiting Nicaragua’s North Atlantic Autonomous Region on May 25. “We have to wait for awhile and say [that] now we are going to allow the forests to reflourish for a period of time without touching them.” Lisandro D’Leon, Nicaragua’s special prosecutor for environmental defense, claims he has evidence that several congressmen and...
