Too many Gulf of California artisanal fishers for resource to bear

Mexican oceanographer Alfredo Girón, a researcher at the University of California at Santa Barbara’s National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), worries about the health of the Gulf of California. While illegal fishing has decimated populations of the endemic vaquita porpoise and totoaba, he says, the gulf’s fisheries in general are overexploited. As a doctoral student at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Girón coauthored a report entitled “Too Many Fishers in the Sea: The Economic Ceiling of Artisanal Fisheries.” He and other Scripps researchers concluded that artisanal fishers in the Gulf of California are too numerous to earn sufficient income from available fishing stocks. Girón, now a postdoctoral research scholar at NCEAS, is originally from Mexico City. He studied oceanography at the Autonomous University of Baja California in Ensenada and focuses much of his current research on fisheries management.
