A British ship carrying radioactive waste around Cape Horn has left angry protests in its wake in Argentina and Chile, boosting pressure on the two nations to strengthen their opposition to such shipments. Pacific Swan, loaded with 76.8 tons of vitrified, high-level nuclear waste, passed near Argentina and Chile this month as it rounded Cape Horn on its way from France to Japan. The vessel, owned by Pacific Nuclear Transport Limited (PNTL), did not cross either country’s 12-mile (19-km) territorial limit. But it did sail through each one’s 200-mile (320-km) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), over which environmentalists want the two countries to assert jurisdiction to block further shipments.
