Mexico is moving to extend its clean-industry certificate to numerous sectors of the economy and turn it into an internationally recognized green seal. The Clean Industry name will be dropped and replaced with that of Certificate of Environmental Compliance (Certificado de Cumplimiento Ambiental) to clarify what is being certified: compliance with Mexico’s existing environmental laws. The new moniker also reflects an attempt to extend the program’s reach beyond smokestack industry to such activities as logging, fishing, captive-wildlife breeding and tourism. A separate seal called Environmental Excellence (Excelencia Ambiental) will be awarded to those who adopt environmental safeguards that are more stringent than the law requires.
