Industry is showing generally good compliance with a new Brazilian regulation requiring the recycling or destruction of discarded tires, officials here say. The measure’s first months have not been problem-free. One group affected by the regulation—automakers that import some of the vehicles they sell—initially refused to take responsibility for tires on the cars and trucks they bring into the country. But under government pressure, these companies are now complying, according to Ibama, the government’s environmental-enforcement arm. Behind the attention on tire disposal is Resolution No. 258, a measure aimed at preventing discarded tires from choking Brazil’s landfills, littering the landscape and providing habitat for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
