Venezuela plans gas plant for remote peninsula

A massive gas-exporting complex slated for a remote and biodiverse peninsula of Venezuela’s central coast is stirring environmental concerns as plans for the $2.3-billion project move forward. The Mariscal Sucre project calls for construction of a natural-gas liquification complex on the southern side of the Paria Peninsula, some of which is a national park. It likely would require installation of a pipeline across the peninsula, probably above ground, to link the plant to undersea gas fields in the Caribbean. A similar project was begun in the early 1990s under the name Cristóbal Colon, but it was canceled amid falling natural-gas prices. In June, a framework agreement for the new project was signed.
