Forest-protection lobby grows in Argentina

With concerns about excessive logging here on the rise, a broad movement has formed in Argentina to stop the destruction of native forests—and politicians appear to be getting the message. Environmentalists, scientists, indigenous activists and high-profile figures ranging from Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Pérez Esquivel to popular musician León Gieco have joined in an unprecedented campaign to educate the public and push for action. Amid the public calls, the lower house of Argentina’s Congress recently approved a non-binding resolution recommending a nationwide halt to timber cutting until a new national forest-protection law is drafted and put in place.
