Despite growing resistance, Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has announced that it will start work this year on the controversial La Parota dam planned near Acapulco. The billion-dollar project has the support of federal and Guerrero state authorities, but it is opposed both by Mexican environmental groups and by local farmers organized into the Council of Ejidos and Communities Opposed to La Parota (Cecop). The project also has divided local residents into pro and anti- dam factions that have clashed violently, causing three deaths. Most recently, anti-dam activist Eduardo Maya was stoned to death on Jan. 30 in the community of Dos Arroyos.
