Stephan Halloy’s scientific research in Latin America has taken him from the top of the Socompa Volcano on the Chilean-Argentine border, where he discovered one of the world’s highest plant communities, to the Galápagos Islands, where he studied marine green turtles. He has spent more than a decade researching complex systems, biodiversity and climate change, and helped set up the first monitoring sites for the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments (Gloria) in New Zealand, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. A Belgian-born biologist who earned degrees from the National University of Tucumán in Argentina, where he was raised, and did post-doctoral research at Otago University in New Zealand, he is science coordinator for The Nature Conservancy’s southern Andes conservation region and ecology professor at the National University of Chilecito in Argentina.
