U.S., CITES press Peru on its illegal logging

Peruvian officials say they are making progress on mechanisms to stop illegal logging in the country’s Amazon region, but U.S. trade officials and international environmental authorities call the pace too slow. As the Aug. 1 deadline passed for Peru to comply with the provisions of the forest-sector governance annex to its free-trade agreement with the United States, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative issued a statement saying it was “deeply concerned” that Peru “has not yet taken all necessary steps to ensure complete implementation” of the annex. U.S. officials were scheduled to meet with their Peruvian counterparts on Aug. 19 and 20.
