Costa Rican and Nicaraguan officials this month began oral arguments at the International Court of Justice at The Hague, Netherlands to settle a dispute over border territory in the San Juan River basin. The disagreement forms part of a century-long struggle between the two nations over control of the San Juan River, much of whose 120-mile (190-km) course from Lake Nicaragua to the Caribbean runs along their common border. The current dispute concerns a 94-square-mile (151-sq-km) area of wetlands known as Isla Portillos in Costa Rica and Harbour Head in Nicaragua.
