New win for Argentine animal-rights groups

An agreement that an Argentine animal-rights group has reached with local and provincial authorities to close a zoo has become the latest win for those opposing the confinement and display of wild animals here. The closure accord concerns the municipal zoo of Rawson, capital of the Patagonian province of Chubut. Under a recent agreement the city signed with Animal Dignity, a nonprofit formed by Chubut animal-rights activists in 2011, the zoo will close its doors within six months. Animal Dignity has alleged various problems are evident at the zoo, including cramped cages and insufficient veterinary care.
