Brazil is gearing up to tap REDD+, the UN-backed strategy to promote economic incentives for improved forest protection in developing nations as a means of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. REDD+, known formally as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, is seen by many experts as a much-needed tool in the fight to slow climate change. The release of CO2 caused by destruction and degradation of woodlands is estimated to account for around 20% of global greenhouse-gas emissions. That’s why forest conservation efforts in Brazil—with its enormous expanses of woodlands, particularly in the Amazon region—are seen as vital in the global fight to slow climate change.
