Adrián Velasco Jácome founded Futuro Circular, a Mexican consultancy that helps businesses prepare to take part in a ‘circular economy’ marked by minimal waste and pollution, regeneration of natural systems, and reuse and recycling of materials. Velasco’s early work as an industrial designer led him to appreciate how economic activities affect the environment, sparking his interest in the development of a circular economy, a subject he lectures on at Mexico’s University of the Environment (UMA), a private institution. He is not alone in this interest. In February, Mexico City’s Congress—the legislative branch of the city government—passed legislation to promote a circular-economy model. The measure creates a system under which businesses can seek certification for compliance with circular-economy standards in order to qualify to provide services to the city government. The law also provides for public-information initiatives aimed at enlisting consumers and businesses in circular-economy efforts and reporting on the results. Velasco spoke recently with EcoAméricas correspondent Lara Rodríguez.
