Making paper using stone waste from mines. Cultivating seaweed to produce biogas and fertilizer. Growing mushrooms in commercial quantities with compost made from coffee grounds and other organic waste. Deploying yeasts found in the forests to make beer on an industrial scale. These are some of the social- and economic-development paths that “Blue Economy” visionary Gunter Pauli of Belgium is urging Argentina to undertake, following a series of eight visits that began in March. Pauli made the recommendations this month at the invitation of Argentina’s Environment Ministry, drawing on his findings in Argentina and on the results of projects undertaken in countries including China, Serbia, Belgium and the United States.
